Background

Dr Alp Atik is a dual-fellowship trained cataract and glaucoma specialist. He is a consultant ophthalmologist on the Glaucoma Unit at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Austin Health. He is also affiliated with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, where he researches the health economics of glaucoma treatment to ensure patients are provided with the best care available. He is one of the few Australians to have undertaken a second glaucoma fellowship in the United States at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he managed some of the most challenging glaucoma and cataract cases in the world.

Education

Dr Atik has a Master of Public Health, majoring in health policy from Harvard University. At the same time, he undertook a research fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary through Harvard Medical School. Dr Atik finished his undergraduate education at the University of Newcastle, graduating with Distinction from Medicine and First Class Honours in Medical Science. He also has a Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) from the University of Sydney.

Research

Dr Atik leads a health economic research group at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and Centre for Eye Research Australia. He has numerous publications in international journals and has been the recipient of multiple research grants, including the Australian Government’s Endeavour Research Scholarship. He is currently collaborating with Harvard University, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the University of Alabama at Birmingham on health economics in glaucoma. This is to ensure patients are offered safe and effective treatments at all times.
